Inspiring many folktales, Calendula is a sacred plant in India and was used in ancient Mayan and Aztec ceremonies. Native to Egypt, it was introduced to England where it became a staple in medieval gardens. Europeans brought it to America. Colonists flavoured cooked greens, soups and oatmeal with calendula, and even made wine from it.

In Europe, Calendula flowers were scattered under the bed to protect the sleeper, and holding them protected the individual from plague and thieves. Flowers were strung and hung over doorways and windows for protection, and used for decorations for May Day and Beltaine.

During the American Civil War, soldiers carried calendula leaves and flowers with them into the battlefields to dress open wounds and burns.

Note:  Individuals who are allergic to ragweed may find that they are also sensitive to calendula.

Lavenderrepresents refinement, grace, serenity, calmness and elegance. It holds a sacred place in nature, and with its violet flowers is often considered the most delicate and precious.

Lavender flowers are purple in color and the color purple is associated with the crown chakra, which is the energy center associated with higher purpose and spiritual connectivity. The crown or seventh chakra is located at the top of the head and the vibration of the crown is the highest vibration in the physical body. This symbolism is appropriate as the lavender flower is often used for healing. Raising our vibration to the highest level possible promotes healing.

Horsetail

Horsetail stems are rich in silica, which help our bodies to form collagen, an important protein found in connective tissue, skin, bone, cartilage and ligaments. Because of this horsetail is helpful in mending broken bones, treating and preventing osteoporosis, and as a general tonic to keep the framework of the body healthy.

Herbalists also recognize the diuretic properties of horsetail. When prepared in a tea, ingested as a juice, or taken in a capsule, it promotes urination, and is a remedy for bladder and urinary tract infections and helps heal stomach ulcers and remove kidney stones. Horsetail also strengthens the bladder wall.

A warm horsetail poultice can be applied to a fresh cut to help stop bleeding. A poultice or tea benefits fractured bones, sprains, or rheumatic conditions as the silica helps increase bone density, and this makes it a supportive therapy for osteopororosis.

A cool wash can be made to help heal burns, bug bites and skin eruptions.

The juice of the plant, especially the sterile stems, is good for anaemia, which have resulted from internal blending from such illnesses as stomach ulcers. It acts by promoting coagulation of the blood. Horsetail tea is als good for excessive menstrual flow.
The spring budding shoots of the antiooxidant rich horsetail can be used as a steam vegetable or tea. They are high in many minerals including calcium, magnesium, and sulphur.

Lavender Calendula Salve

4 ounces calendula infused olive oil

1/2 ounce beeswax (about 2 tablespoons grated, packed beeswax)

25-50 drops of lavender essential oil

Gently heat the beeswax in a double boiler or slow cooker. When the beeswax is melted, add in the calendula oil. Allow it to warm up for 30-60 seconds, then stir until the beeswax and oil are thoroughly mixed. If you’re adding essential oils, wait until the mixture cools just a little and then stir them in.

Pour your salve into a clean, dry container and allow to cool. Makes 6 ounces.

This wonderful healing and moisturizing salve can also be used for scrapes and bee stings.

Variation: Substitute tea tree essential oil for lavender

Melt the wax, butter and oil together on the double boiler (or in a microwave in 30 second increments)

Once completely melted, add the vitamin E and essential oils and stir. Pour into a container of your choice and let harden.

This recipe makes approximately 2 ounces of finished beard balm.
